Yay 1000 fans? FPS and easing

Posted by Kel-chan - May 31st, 2015

Yay 1000+ fans sort of....

Thanks to Tom for making that banner thing although now I'm leery since theres a bunch of ppl that clicked on it without watching my prior stuff. It seems a cheesy way to break 1000 but I'll try to get better.

One main issue I have been having which is readily visible in the Spike V Revy video is the lack of easing and some of the stiff and non smooth animation.

Of course thats craptastic animation on my part but also I did not use any motion capture in that as I just wanted to practice my basic animtion which is why it looks different from say Arc Infinitum.

Never again! Motion capture forever

Anyways I'm trying to work on some stuff though I'm not sure how I want to do it. Funny thing with 3d is you can imitate a more 2D style or 3D style which would be like trying to make something like game cutscenes.

I lean more toward the 2D so I'm going to try that first

Here's some raw animation from the gunmetal black fight with no effects or things yet. Personally I like this lower frame rate that mimics some 2d stuff. It just has the right amount of 2D jumpy-ness i guess. Also it results in much smaller file sizes. 60FPS files ARE HUGE. I can't do a whole series with that since I'd run out of HDD space. Also with the lower frame rate, the physics twitches and problems are much less noticeable.

Hopefully I'll get this done already, it'd taking forever

I'd say go for it with that 2D style frame-rate. I actually like it, and I think if you're more comfortable with something like that, it'll make you more productive in the long run. And you get +1,000,000 internets from me, because I've tried 3D animation a bunch of times and just can't do it.

I also enjoy the 2D style versus the 60 FPS. The 60 FPS looks too rushed (I do not mean that it looks like it was made hastily, but that at that fast a frame rate the characters move faster than Sonic on 3 types of cocaine and 2 types o ecstasy). At 60 FPS most of the action happens so fast it is hard to enjoy it ya know? That is one of the main reasons I enjoy your animations so much, the action is smooth and fluid, but not sluggish like a lot of other 3D work.

You deserve the 1000+ fans and many many more! There are so few great 3D artists out there and you are one of the best.

yah the 2Dish frame rate makes it easier to see the action I think

Kel I <3 your work! I agree with the new techniques and I think the sickest thing for a fight animation would be to mimic/customize signature fight moves like it's from a familiar video game (like a straight up copied Ryu jab). Have you seen RWBY? As cheesy as it is, the visual style is beautiful and something I'd love to see with your take on it. I've been dying to make a cg film where character development and dialogue is incredibly slow moving and the action sequences are very fast paced/move the plot forward a sh**load in a span of 5 seconds, but alas, I'll leave it to the pros! Congrats on the full on front page ad! I've been rooting for you for yearz :>

yah I try to do that- take existing fight moves from games and movies and knit things together in fight scenes. sometimes it works sometimes not so much but I noticed Monty did some of that in some of his animation...mostly the dead or alive stuff

Not sure if you've heard of the Dead Fantasy series. Your animated gif in the post made me think of it and I suggest you check it out if you haven't. Been a fan of your work for a couple years now. Came for the FLCL references in Galaxy Police Squad, stayed for the other 3D works. As far as 60FPS is concerned do what you want.

60 FPS for animation is definitely putting more work on yourself and your rendering pipeline than is worth it.

Typically, film (and animation) is shot at 24 fps, while video is shot at 29.97. To further complicate things, animation can fluctuate frame rate based on the action on screen. Anime even at times dips as low as 8 frames per second. The Hobbit movies got a lot of blowback from audiences for doubling up to 48 fps, which in the eyes of some viewers broke a lot of the effects by removing the subtle motion blur effect.

for a bit more on animation frame rates, I suggest checking out this video:

yah I'm sticking with 12 to 15. 60fps isn't worth it and is only good for doing mocap recorded animations.
